⚡ When Fuel Hits R37/L — What It Means for the Electrician on the Road
The reality is here… and it’s hitting hard.
With diesel pushing toward R37 per litre, every kilometre you drive is now directly eating into your profit margin. 🚚💸
For electricians, this isn’t just a number on a fuel pump — it’s a daily operational shift.
🔧 The Real Impact on Your Business
Let’s be honest about how this changes your day-to-day:
- Travel is no longer a “small cost” — it’s a major expense.
- Quoting becomes more complex — distance now matters more than ever.
- Call-outs become risky — especially for small jobs.
- Profit margins shrink silently if you don’t adjust.
That quick “just pop in” job 25km away?
It’s no longer quick… and it’s definitely not cheap.
📉 The Hidden Danger: Absorbing the Cost
Many electricians make the same mistake:
“I’ll just absorb the fuel cost… I don’t want to lose the client.”
Sounds noble.
But in reality, you’re slowly bleeding your business dry.
⚠️ If you don’t price correctly, you’re not running a business — you’re funding one.
👷♂️ The Client Side: Pressure Is Everywhere
Here’s the important part… your clients are also under pressure.
- Rising fuel costs 🚗
- Increasing food prices 🛒
- Higher interest rates 🏠
So what happens?
👉 DIY increases
👉 Shortcuts increase
👉 Unqualified work increases
This is where the real danger lies.
⚠️ The Rise of DIY Electrical Work
When costs rise, people try to save.
But electricity doesn’t negotiate.
We will start seeing more:
- Unsafe installations
- Non-compliant repairs
- “Quick fixes” that become major hazards
And ultimately…
👉 More risk for property owners
👉 More liability for registered electricians
🧠 So How Do We Respond as Professionals?
This is where we separate reaction from strategy.
1️⃣ Be Transparent in Your Pricing
Stop hiding your costs.
Introduce:
- Call-out fees based on distance
- Fuel surcharges where applicable
- Clear breakdowns on quotes
Clients respect clarity more than cheapness.
2️⃣ Educate Your Clients
This is your strongest tool.
Explain:
- Why professional work costs what it does
- The risk of non-compliance
- The legal responsibility tied to a COC
Position yourself as the professional, not just the “guy with tools”.
3️⃣ Work Smarter, Not Harder
Reduce unnecessary travel:
- Group jobs by area 📍
- Plan routes efficiently
- Limit non-essential call-outs
Every kilometre saved = money back in your pocket.
4️⃣ Introduce Value-Based Pricing
Stop charging only for time.
Charge for:
- Experience
- Compliance knowledge
- Responsibility carried when signing a COC
Remember:
👉 You’re not paid for turning a screwdriver
👉 You’re paid for knowing what to do and taking responsibility for it
5️⃣ Use Technology to Your Advantage
This is where the industry is evolving.
Digital tools (like job management systems and e-COC platforms) help:
- Reduce repeat visits
- Capture data on-site
- Improve efficiency
Less admin = fewer trips = lower costs.
🔥 The Mindset Shift
This is not just about fuel…
This is about adapting your business model.
The electricians who survive this period will be the ones who:
✔ Adjust pricing confidently
✔ Educate their market
✔ Protect their time and travel
✔ Refuse to compete on being the cheapest
💡 Final Thought
Fuel may be R37 today… and it might go higher tomorrow.
You can’t control the price at the pump —
but you can control how your business responds to it.
