Your Next Electrical Opportunity Could Be Behind the Smart Meter

What South Africa’s meter rollout means for electricians and their customers

By Nearby Electrician | 23 October 2026

“Since they installed this new meter, my electricity keeps switching off.”

This is the kind of call an electrician may receive as South Africa expands its smart meter rollout. The customer suspects a faulty meter. The electrician needs to establish whether the problem involves the installation, the supply, an appliance—or an operating limit the customer does not understand.

Understanding the technology gives electricians an opportunity to diagnose problems accurately, explain electricity consumption and help customers manage their demand.

Why smart meters are in the spotlight

In March 2026, the Department of Electricity and Energy announced a programme targeting smart meter deployment across load reduction feeders by 2027, with a broader rollout of more than six million meters by 2029. These are programme targets, rather than completed installations. South African Government

Progress is already being reported. In an October update, government news service SAnews reported that 521,453 smart meters had been installed on load reduction feeders, approximately 90% of the stated priority-area target of 577,347. This figure relates specifically to those feeders, rather than the entire national meter rollout. SAnews

For electricians, the practical implication is clear: more customers will need help understanding how their supply operates and how their appliances contribute to demand.

What makes a meter “smart”?

Smart metering adds communication and control capabilities to electricity measurement. Within the government’s announced programme, meters support visibility of consumption, tamper detection, remote disconnection and load limiting. The functions available to a particular customer depend on the installed equipment and the electricity supplier’s implementation. South African Government

A keypad alone does not tell the customer which functions their meter supports. The useful questions are: What meter is installed? What has the supplier enabled? What information or messages can the customer access?

Electricians who can explain these details give customers something valuable: a better understanding of their own electricity supply.

Load shedding, load reduction and load limiting

Customers often use these terms interchangeably, but they describe different situations.

TermWhat it meansLoad sheddingElectricity supply is interrupted to help balance demand against available supply across the power system.Load reductionSupply is interrupted in particular areas to protect overloaded local infrastructure, including areas affected by illegal connections.Load limitingA participating customer’s permitted demand is temporarily reduced. Some electricity remains available, provided consumption stays within the configured limit.

Eskom describes load limiting as a way to manage demand through smart meters. Its load reduction programme addresses local infrastructure overloading, which can remain a problem even when national generation is sufficient. loadshedding.eskom.co.za

Having electricity available does not always mean a household can operate every appliance at once.

How a household can exceed a limit

Eskom’s published residential load management guidance gives an example of temporarily reducing a participating single-phase supply to 10 A, equivalent to approximately 2.3 kW at 230 V for a predominantly resistive load. This is an example from its published scheme; customers must confirm the actual arrangements applying to their supply. Distribution

Consider this illustrative household load:

Term What it means Load shedding Electricity supply is interrupted to help balance demand against available supply across the power system. Load reduction Supply is interrupted in particular areas to protect overloaded local infrastructure, including areas affected by illegal connections. Load limiting A participating customer’s permitted demand is temporarily reduced. Some electricity remains available, provided consumption stays within the configured limit.

Equipment operating together Assumed demand:

Kettle 2,000 W

Television 100 W

Lights 100 W

Router 15 W

Total2,215 W

That leaves very little room under an approximate 2.3 kW limit. Another appliance starting could push demand above it. Actual appliance ratings, motor starting currents and power factor must be considered when assessing an installation.

Eskom explains that exceeding a configured load limit can cause the meter to disconnect the supply and show a “Power Overload” message. This is why checking the customer interface and supplier notifications can be an important part of the investigation. Distribution

The opportunity: help customers understand their loads

The work surrounding smart meters extends into the customer’s installation.

A household may have enough capacity for its normal daily energy needs but still create excessive demand by operating several large appliances simultaneously. An electrician can help identify those combinations and propose suitable controls.

Useful services may include:

Load assessments: identifying major appliances and measuring demand.
Consumption monitoring: helping customers understand when and where electricity is used.
Suitable load controls: assessing timers, contactors or automatic load management.
Circuit identification: making the distribution board easier to understand and operate.
Customer guidance: explaining which appliances can reasonably run together.

These are potential service opportunities around customers’ installations. They do not imply that every electrician is authorised to install, configure or work on a utility-owned meter.

A good assessment should also distinguish reducing peak demand from reducing energy consumption. Moving an appliance to a different time can reduce simultaneous demand without necessarily reducing the total kWh it consumes.

A battery system can also draw heavily from the grid

Customers often think about an inverter in terms of what it supplies during an outage. Its battery charger can also contribute significantly to household demand when grid charging is enabled.

Eskom’s residential guidance specifically raises battery charging as a load that customers must consider during a limiting event. Distribution

For an electrician assessing the customer’s installation, useful questions include:

Is grid charging enabled, and when does it operate?
What charging power is configured?
Which other large appliances run at that time?
Does the equipment support appropriate grid import or demand controls?

Any setting changes should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable supply conditions. The aim is to manage demand while retaining the protection and operating limits the installation requires.

Does a smart meter automatically save money?

A meter change alone is not a promise of a lower bill.

Customers need to understand three separate things: how much energy they consume, when they consume it, and how their tariff charges for it.

Better information can support better decisions. However, shifting consumption to another time only produces a tariff-related saving where the applicable tariff rewards that change. Similarly, reducing maximum demand and reducing total energy use are different outcomes.

Electricians can add value by helping customers measure first and choose improvements based on evidence.

Diagnose before replacing

When a customer reports that “the new meter keeps tripping”, establish what is actually disconnecting.

Is the meter opening its internal switching device? Is a circuit breaker operating? Is an earth leakage device tripping? Is the inverter reporting an overload? Has the incoming supply failed?

These observations lead to different investigations. A meter message is useful evidence, but it does not establish the condition of the entire installation.

Record the symptoms, check which appliances were running and follow the appropriate testing process. Where the issue concerns the utility meter or supply settings, involve the electricity supplier.

Nearby Electrician’s message to our members

South Africa’s changing electricity system creates a need for electricians who can combine sound practical work with clear explanations.

A customer may call because the power went off. Your assessment may reveal an appliance fault, an installation defect, excessive simultaneous demand or a supply issue requiring the distributor’s attention.

The opportunity is to understand the cause and provide the right solution.

Keep developing your knowledge of metering, monitoring, load management and inverter systems. Explain your findings in language customers understand, and recommend work that solves a demonstrated problem.

As electricity systems become smarter, informed electricians will play an increasingly valuable role.
