Solar systems are installed to save money, generate power and give homes and businesses more energy security. But once the system is installed, many people forget one simple maintenance task that can make a big difference over time:
Keeping the solar panels clean.
Solar panels work by absorbing sunlight. When the glass surface is covered with dust, bird droppings, leaves, pollution, salt spray, pollen or general dirt build-up, less sunlight reaches the cells. The result is simple: the system may not perform at its best.
That is why Nearby Electrician, in collaboration with Beatus Agri, has launched a professional Solar Panel Wash — specially formulated for the solar industry.
This is not ordinary soap. It is a dedicated solar cleaning concentrate designed to clean panels effectively, rinse properly and leave no residue behind.
Why clean solar panels matter
A solar panel is exposed to the environment every day. Even when panels look reasonably clean from the ground, they may still have a fine layer of dust or pollution on the surface. Over time, this layer can affect the panel’s ability to absorb sunlight properly.
Clean solar panels help with:
1. Better sunlight absorption 🌞
The cleaner the glass surface, the easier it is for sunlight to reach the solar cells. Dirt, dust and stains create a barrier between the sun and the panel.
2. Improved system efficiency ⚡
A clean system is more likely to operate closer to its intended performance. Regular cleaning forms part of good solar system care.
3. Better power generation 🔋
When panels are dirty, the system may not produce as effectively as expected. Keeping panels clean helps support better generation, especially during high-production seasons.
4. Professional appearance 🏠
For electricians, solar installers and maintenance contractors, clean panels also reflect professionalism. A neat solar installation creates confidence with the client.
5. Longer-term system care 🛠️
Regular cleaning gives the owner or contractor a chance to visually notice obvious issues such as excessive dirt build-up, bird activity, shading problems, loose debris or general maintenance concerns.
How often should solar panels be cleaned?
The correct cleaning frequency depends on the environment where the system is installed.
As a practical guideline:
Normal residential areas:
Clean every 3 to 6 months, depending on dust and rainfall.
Dusty areas, farms, gravel roads or industrial areas:
Clean every 1 to 3 months, as panels can build up dirt much faster.
Coastal areas:
Clean every 2 to 4 months, especially where salt spray and coastal residue are present.
After heavy bird activity, storms, fires, construction dust or long dry periods:
Clean as soon as practical, because these conditions can leave heavy contamination on the panel surface.
Rain can help remove loose dust, but it does not always clean panels properly. Bird droppings, sticky dirt, dust film and mineral marks often need proper washing with the correct cleaning product.
What NOT to use on solar panels 🚫
Solar panels should not be treated like normal windows, vehicle panels or general outdoor surfaces. The wrong product or method can leave marks, residue or even damage the panel surface.
Avoid the following:
1. Do not use ordinary dishwashing liquid
Many household soaps are not designed for solar panels and may leave a film or residue behind. A residue layer can attract more dust and reduce the benefit of cleaning.
2. Do not use harsh chemicals
Avoid strong degreasers, solvents, bleach, acidic cleaners or unknown chemical mixtures. Solar panels need a product that is gentle on the surface but effective enough to remove dirt.
3. Do not use abrasive brushes or rough pads
Hard brushes, steel wool or abrasive pads can scratch the glass or damage coatings. Use soft brushes, wipers or microfiber cleaning tools.
4. Do not clean hot panels in direct midday heat
Cleaning very hot panels can cause quick drying, streaking and unnecessary thermal stress. Early morning or late afternoon is normally better.
5. Do not use high-pressure cleaning directly on panels
High pressure may force water into areas where it should not go, especially around frames, seals or electrical components. Gentle washing and proper rinsing is the safer approach.
6. Do not dry-wipe dusty panels
Dry wiping can drag dust across the surface and may cause scratching. Always use water and the correct cleaning solution.
Safety note: solar systems involve electrical equipment and often roof work. Always follow the system manufacturer’s requirements, safe access procedures and use competent persons where work at height or electrical safety is involved.
