The Future of Solar in South Africa: Is Going Off-Grid Really the Answer?

The Future of Solar in South Africa: Is Going Off-Grid Really the Answer?

Solar in South Africa is entering a new phase.

For several years, the conversation around residential solar was dominated by one problem: load shedding. Consumers installed inverters, batteries and solar panels because they wanted electricity when the grid could not provide it.

But the conversation is changing.

South Africa has now surpassed 10.12 GW of installed solar PV capacity, according to the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), representing approximately 19% year-on-year growth. Solar is no longer a niche technology reserved for businesses, farms or wealthy households. It has become a significant part of South Africa's electricity landscape.

At the same time, electricity continues to become more expensive. Eskom's standard tariffs increased by 8.76% from 1 April 2026, while municipal bulk electricity tariffs increased by 9.01% from 1 July 2026.

Consumers are therefore asking a different question:

If I am already spending money on solar, batteries and an inverter, why don't I simply go completely off-grid?

It sounds attractive.

No dependence on Eskom.

No dependence on a municipality for electricity.

No solar registration because there is no grid connection.

No concern about future electricity tariff increases.

Your roof becomes your power station and your batteries become your electricity reserve.

But there is another side to the equation:

How much does true independence actually cost?

First, What Does "Off-Grid" Actually Mean?

The term off-grid is frequently used incorrectly.

Having solar panels and batteries does not automatically make a property off-grid.

A house with an inverter, batteries and solar panels that remains electrically connected to Eskom or a municipal electricity network is generally still a grid-connected installation.

Even if the system is configured not to export electricity, the grid connection still exists.

Eskom states that embedded generation installations with a grid connection must be registered with the relevant distributor according to their installed capacity. Systems without a point of connection to the electricity grid are exempt from the registration requirement.

Therefore:

Hybrid solar with Eskom backup ≠ off-grid.

Zero export ≠ off-grid.

Using almost no Eskom electricity ≠ off-grid.

True off-grid means that the property can operate completely independently of the electricity network.

And that distinction becomes extremely important when calculating the cost.

Three Ways a Consumer Can Approach Solar

For most South African households, solar can broadly be divided into three approaches.

1. Grid-Tied Solar

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours and reduce the amount of electricity purchased from the grid.

This can be one of the cheapest ways to reduce electricity consumption because large battery banks are not necessarily required.

However, a conventional grid-tied inverter must disconnect when the grid fails because anti-islanding protection prevents the installation from energising the utility network while technicians may be working on it.

The advantage is lower capital cost.

The disadvantage is continued dependence on the grid.

2. Hybrid Solar

This is where solar becomes particularly interesting for South African households.

A hybrid system combines:

Solar + Battery + Grid

During the day, solar supplies the house and charges the batteries.

At night, stored energy can be used.

If solar production is insufficient or the batteries reach their permitted discharge level, the grid becomes the backup.

This means the consumer can potentially purchase very little electricity while still retaining the grid as an enormous emergency backup system.

3. Completely Off-Grid

Now remove the grid.

The system becomes:

Solar + Battery + possibly Generator

There is no Eskom safety net.

There is no municipal electricity backup.

When the batteries are empty and there is insufficient sunlight, something else must supply the electricity — or the house goes dark.

And that changes the engineering considerably.

The Problem With Designing for Off-Grid

A hybrid system can be designed around normal conditions.

A true off-grid system must be designed around abnormal conditions.

Imagine a household normally consumes 20 kWh per day.

On a beautiful summer day the solar array may produce more than enough electricity to run the house and recharge the batteries.

Everything looks perfect.

But what happens when there are two or three poor solar-production days?

What happens during winter?

What happens when additional heating is required?

What happens when the geyser, stove, pool pump, borehole pump and other large loads are operating?

What happens when the family has visitors and consumption suddenly increases?

A hybrid installation simply takes the shortage from the grid.

An off-grid installation cannot.

That means the system needs additional redundancy.

And redundancy costs money.

Batteries Become the Biggest Question

Solar panels themselves have become remarkably affordable compared with historical prices.

The expensive part of true energy independence is increasingly energy storage.

A consumer might install a 10 kWh battery and find that it comfortably carries the house through most evenings.

But 10 kWh of battery capacity is not the same as having several days of autonomy.

A properly engineered off-grid system may require substantially more storage depending on the household's load profile.

Current South African market guides illustrate how quickly costs increase as battery capacity and autonomy increase. Indicative 2026 installed off-grid system estimates range from approximately:

Example systemIndicative installed cost3 kW basic off-gridR85,000 – R120,0005 kW small-home off-gridR125,000 – R175,0008 kW off-gridR185,000 – R260,00010 kW family-home/smallholdingR245,000 – R360,000

These figures are market indications rather than quotations. Actual costs depend heavily on consumption, battery capacity, equipment quality, roof construction, distribution-board alterations, protection equipment, installation complexity and required autonomy.

This is why asking:

"How much does a 10 kW solar system cost?"

is often the wrong question.

The better question is:

"How much electricity does my property use, when do I use it, and how long must the property survive without adequate solar production?"

You Don't Design Off-Grid for the Best Day

This is one of the most important principles consumers need to understand.

A solar salesperson can show you excellent production figures from a sunny summer day.

That doesn't prove that the property can operate off-grid.

True off-grid design needs to consider the difficult days.

South African winter conditions also differ significantly by region. The interior generally experiences relatively dry, sunny winters, while the Western Cape experiences winter rainfall and potentially extended cloudy periods. Solar production can consequently be substantially lower during poor weather.

If your house consumes 20 kWh per day and you want two days of meaningful battery autonomy, suddenly the storage requirement becomes very different from a standard 5 kWh or 10 kWh residential battery installation.

Then those batteries still need to be recharged.

That requires sufficient solar capacity not only to operate the house but also to replenish the battery bank after poor production days.

This is why true off-grid installations are normally deliberately oversized.

Then There Are the Big Loads

Electricity consumers sometimes focus on lights, televisions, Wi-Fi and refrigerators.

Those are rarely the loads that destroy an off-grid energy budget.

The serious consumers are typically things such as:

• Electric geysers
• Electric stoves and ovens
• Space heaters
• Air conditioners
• Pool pumps
• Borehole pumps
• Large workshop equipment
• EV charging

This creates an interesting situation.

The cheapest way to go off-grid may actually be to use less electricity.

Before spending another R50,000 or R100,000 on battery storage, it may make considerably more sense to reduce the property's electrical demand.

A solar geyser or heat pump can reduce water-heating demand.

Timers can move loads into solar-production hours.

Efficient appliances can reduce base consumption.

Pool pumps can operate during daylight.

High-consumption heating can be reconsidered.

Smart energy management can prevent several large loads from operating simultaneously.

The cheapest kilowatt-hour is often the one you no longer need to generate or store.

The Generator Nobody Talks About

There is also an uncomfortable reality surrounding many genuine off-grid systems.

They still have a backup generator.

Why?

Because engineering a solar-and-battery system capable of surviving virtually every possible weather event can become extraordinarily expensive.

It may make more economic sense to design for 95% or 98% solar independence and allow a generator to cover the rare extended shortage.

But then the consumer needs to consider:

fuel,

servicing,

noise,

generator lifespan,

automatic changeover,

fuel storage,

and maintenance.

You may have disconnected from Eskom — but you haven't necessarily eliminated backup generation.

You have simply become responsible for providing it yourself.

So What Are the Advantages of Going Completely Off-Grid?

There are certainly significant advantages.

Energy independence is the obvious one. Your electricity supply is no longer dependent on the utility network.

You gain considerably greater control over future electricity costs.

Remote properties where bringing in an Eskom connection would be prohibitively expensive may find off-grid generation particularly attractive.

A correctly designed installation can provide excellent energy security.

And once the infrastructure has been paid for, solar energy itself does not arrive with a monthly fuel invoice.

For farms, lodges, remote homes and certain smallholdings, off-grid can therefore make excellent practical and economic sense.

But What Are the Disadvantages?

The first is capital cost.

True off-grid normally requires more panels, substantially more battery storage and greater redundancy than a hybrid system.

The second is responsibility.

When you disconnect from the electricity network, you effectively become your own small electricity utility.

If something fails, there is no grid to fall back on.

The third is battery replacement.

Solar panels may provide decades of service, but batteries and inverters are not immortal. Their eventual replacement needs to form part of the long-term financial calculation.

The fourth is energy discipline.

A grid-connected household can be relatively careless.

An off-grid household needs to understand its energy budget.

Three heaters, the geyser, oven and pool pump cannot necessarily operate simultaneously simply because someone wants them to.

The Alternative: Become Almost Off-Grid

For many South African households, this may ultimately be the most practical solution.

Instead of spending enormous amounts of money trying to achieve the final few percentage points of independence, a consumer can build a strong hybrid installation.

Imagine a system capable of supplying 80%, 90% or even more of a household's annual electricity requirements from solar and stored energy.

The grid then becomes backup.

You may purchase relatively little electricity from it, but it remains available when several poor solar days occur.

Economically, that last 5–10% of independence can be extremely expensive because it requires battery and generation capacity that may sit unused for much of the year.

This is why energy independence and grid disconnection are not necessarily the same objective.

A consumer can become highly energy independent without physically removing the grid connection.

But Doesn't Staying Connected Mean Registration?

Where the property remains connected to the electricity network, the applicable embedded-generation requirements still need to be followed.

Importantly, Eskom announced on 30 September 2026 that its waiver of registration-related charges for eligible customer-owned generation systems of up to 50 kVA connected directly to its distribution network has been extended until further notice. The registration requirement itself remains in place.

Eskom currently requires key compliance documentation including a valid electrical Certificate of Compliance, appropriate inverter certification and the applicable embedded-generation installation documentation.

Consumers supplied by municipalities should confirm the requirements of their specific licensed distributor because processes and tariffs can differ.

So consumers should be careful about disconnecting from the grid simply to avoid registration.

Registration cost and administration need to be compared with the much larger capital cost of engineering genuine off-grid independence.

The Future May Not Be "Eskom or Solar"

Perhaps this is where the South African electricity conversation needs to change.

For years we thought in binary terms:

Eskom OR solar.

The future may be:

Solar first. Battery second. Grid third.

Use your own solar energy when it is available.

Store excess energy for the evening.

Use the grid when your own generation cannot economically meet demand.

And where permitted and financially worthwhile, export excess generation rather than wasting it.

In that model, the grid changes from being the household's primary electricity source into an energy safety net.

That is a very different relationship.

So, Should You Go Off-Grid?

There isn't one answer that applies to every property.

For a remote farm facing a very expensive grid connection, complete off-grid operation may be logical.

For a low-consumption household with excellent solar resources, it may also be achievable at a reasonable cost.

For a high-consumption suburban household that already has a reliable grid connection, completely disconnecting may require a substantial additional investment simply to replace a backup service that is already available.

The decision should therefore start with data — not emotion.

Before deciding, determine:

How many kWh do you actually consume per day?

What is your peak demand?

How much do you consume after sunset?

What does winter consumption look like?

How many hours or days of autonomy do you require?

Which loads can be shifted to daytime?

Which loads can be reduced?

What will battery replacement cost over the life of the system?

And finally: what are you actually paying to retain the grid as your backup?

Only then can the numbers tell you whether cutting the cable makes financial sense.

Independence Has a Price — But Dependence Does Too

South African consumers are entering an interesting period.

Solar equipment has become cheaper and more capable, battery technology continues to develop, while grid electricity tariffs continue to change. South Africa has already passed 10 GW of installed solar PV capacity, demonstrating just how rapidly the electricity landscape is evolving.

Going off-grid is no longer an unrealistic dream.

Technically, it is entirely achievable.

The more important question is whether it is economically sensible for your particular property.

For some consumers, the answer will be complete independence.

For many others, the smarter solution may be something slightly different:

Build enough solar and battery capacity that you rarely need the grid — but keep the grid available for the days when buying a few kilowatt-hours is cheaper than owning another R100,000 worth of equipment.

That may ultimately be the real future of residential solar in South Africa.

Not necessarily leaving the grid.

But no longer being dependent on it.

What do you think?

Would you rather invest more money and become completely independent of the grid, or would you prefer a hybrid system where Eskom or your municipality remains your last-resort backup?

For electrical contractors, solar installers and consumers, this is a conversation worth having because the decisions being made today will determine how South African homes consume electricity for decades to come.
