Life can become extremely busy.
There are jobs to complete, customers to satisfy, quotations to prepare, faults to find, materials to collect and deadlines to meet. Then, after the working day is finished, there are still responsibilities waiting at home.
There is your marriage, your children, your family, your health, your rest, your friendships, your church, your community and even the simple need to sit quietly and recover.
Every one of these areas requires time.
The problem is that time does not automatically distribute itself fairly. Whatever demands our attention most loudly can easily consume everything we have. Before long, one area of life begins to grow while another is quietly neglected.
The answer is not to find more hours in the day.
The answer is to live with greater purpose and balance.
“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:1
GOD SHOULD NOT BE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT
We often speak about “making time for God.”
The intention behind those words is good, but God should never be reduced to one small appointment somewhere between work, family and rest.
God must be present in all of it.
He should be present when you leave for work in the morning.
He should be present in the way you speak to your employees and apprentices.
He should be present when you deal with a difficult customer.
He should be present when you return home to your spouse and children.
He should be present in your decisions, your friendships, your finances, your rest and your plans for the future.
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
— Colossians 3:17
The goal is not simply to give God a small portion of your day. The goal is to invite Him into every portion of your life.
SUCCESS IN ONE AREA CANNOT REPLACE NEGLECT IN ANOTHER
Electricians understand the importance of a balanced electrical system.
When one part of a system is overloaded, problems begin to develop. Conductors heat up, equipment is placed under strain and protective devices eventually operate.
Life works in a similar way.
When work carries the entire load, your marriage, health, family life and spiritual wellbeing begin to suffer.
Working hard is honourable. Providing for your family is part of your responsibility. Building a business, developing your skills and pursuing excellence are all worthwhile.
But work must remain in its correct place.
A successful business cannot replace a healthy marriage.
A full bank account cannot replace time with your children.
Professional recognition cannot replace genuine friendships.
Constant activity cannot replace proper rest.
And being busy with responsibilities cannot replace walking closely with God.
PROTECT YOUR MARRIAGE
Marriage requires more than good intentions. It requires attention, communication, patience and time.
A person may believe that working longer hours is proof of love because they are providing for the household. However, when work constantly receives the best of your energy and your spouse only receives what remains, distance can slowly develop.
That distance creates an opening for misunderstanding, loneliness, resentment and temptation.
Scripture warns us not to give the enemy an opportunity.
“Nor give place to the devil.”
— Ephesians 4:27
This does not mean that every difficult season can be avoided. There will be times when work demands more from you. Emergencies happen, deadlines arrive and businesses go through challenging periods.
But a demanding season must not become a permanent lifestyle.
Speak to your spouse. Listen without immediately defending yourself. Make time to reconnect. Protect your relationship before problems force you to give it attention.
Your customers may appreciate your work, but your family needs your presence.
MAKE TIME FOR YOUR CHILDREN AND FAMILY
Children often do not measure love by the size of the house or the price of what you provide.
They remember whether you were present.
They remember the conversations in the vehicle, the time spent teaching them something, the support at an important event and the moments when you put your phone down and listened.
There will always be another job.
There will not always be another childhood.
Your family should understand that your work is important, but they should never feel that they are always competing against it.
MAKE TIME FOR REST
Rest is not laziness.
Even electrical equipment has limits. Machinery that operates continuously without inspection or maintenance will eventually fail.
Your body and mind also require recovery.
Fatigue affects your judgement, patience, concentration and safety. In the electrical industry, exhaustion can lead to serious mistakes.
God designed life with a rhythm of work and rest. Rest gives you the opportunity to recover, reflect and return to your responsibilities with renewed strength.
Sometimes the most responsible thing you can do is stop, breathe and allow yourself to recover.
MAKE TIME FOR FRIENDSHIPS AND COMMUNITY
Life should not consist only of work and sleep.
Healthy friendships provide encouragement, correction, perspective and support. We need people who can celebrate with us, challenge us and stand beside us during difficult seasons.
We must also make time to serve others.
Your experience can guide a young apprentice. Your encouragement can strengthen another electrician. Your knowledge can help someone avoid a costly mistake.
The life God has given you is not only about what you can achieve for yourself. It is also about what you can contribute to the people around you.
BALANCE DOES NOT MEAN EVERYTHING RECEIVES EQUAL TIME
Balance does not mean that every area of life receives exactly the same number of hours every day.
Some seasons will require more work.
Other seasons will require greater attention to your family, health or relationships.
Balance means recognising what requires your attention and refusing to neglect important responsibilities indefinitely.
Ask yourself:
Is my work taking more than it should?
Does my spouse feel valued and heard?
Do my children experience my presence?
Am I taking care of my health?
Do I make time to rest?
Am I maintaining meaningful friendships?
Am I serving others with the gifts God has given me?
Most importantly, is God present in the way I approach every one of these areas?
PUT GOD FIRST — AND TAKE HIM WITH YOU
Jesus said:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
— Matthew 6:33
Putting God first does not mean ignoring your other responsibilities.
It means allowing God to determine how you handle them.
Take God into your workplace.
Take Him into your marriage.
Take Him into your parenting.
Take Him into your friendships.
Take Him into your rest.
Take Him into your financial decisions.
Take Him into your plans, pressures and ambitions.
When God is at the centre, He helps us recognise when something has moved out of balance. He gives us wisdom to know when to work, when to stop, when to speak, when to listen and when to change direction.
THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE
Take an honest look at your life.
Identify the area that has been receiving too much of your time and the area that has been receiving too little.
Then make one deliberate adjustment.
Finish work at a reasonable time and have dinner with your family.
Take your spouse somewhere quiet and have a real conversation.
Spend uninterrupted time with your children.
Call a friend you have neglected.
Set aside time to rest.
Help an apprentice who needs guidance.
Whatever you do, do not leave God behind while attempting to restore balance.
Invite Him into every responsibility, every relationship and every moment.
Make time for everything that matters—but make sure God is present in all of it.
Because a balanced life is not a life in which everything receives equal attention.
It is a life in which everything remains in its proper place, under the guidance of God.
