Change – Sometimes Progress Requires Something Different
There is something comfortable about routine.
We know what to expect. We know how things work. We know where everything fits. And when something has been working for years, our natural response is often:
“Why change it if it still works?”
But in the electrical industry, we know that working and being ready for the future are not always the same thing.
Think about an old house installation.
The lights may still switch on.
The plugs may still provide power.
The geyser may still heat the water.
Nothing may appear obviously wrong.
Yet when we open the distribution board, inspect the wiring or assess the installation against current requirements, we may realise that change is necessary.
Old equipment may need replacing.
Protection may need upgrading.
Wiring may need correcting.
The distribution board may need modernising.
Not necessarily because everything has failed, but because the installation needs to be prepared for the years ahead.
And sometimes life works exactly the same way.
Sometimes Change Is Necessary for Progress
We can become very comfortable with our routines.
The same work.
The same habits.
The same people.
The same thinking.
The same way of doing things.
And because everything still appears to be functioning, we assume everything must remain exactly as it is.
But God may be preparing us for another season.
Sometimes growth requires change.
Sometimes progress requires leaving something familiar behind.
Sometimes the next chapter cannot begin while we are still holding tightly onto the previous one.
Isaiah 43:19 reminds us:
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
Notice that God says He is doing a new thing.
New things naturally involve change.
The Unknown Can Be Uncomfortable
The difficult part about change is that we normally know what we are leaving, but we do not always know exactly what we are entering.
That is where fear can begin.
We understand the old system.
We know the old routine.
We know how things normally work.
But when God begins moving us into something different, suddenly we don't have all the answers.
And that is exactly where faith becomes important.
Hebrews 11:1 tells us:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith is not required when we can already see every step.
Faith becomes necessary when God asks us to move while some of the road ahead is still unknown.
It is saying:
“Lord, I cannot see everything ahead of me, but I trust the One who can.”
Don't Confuse Comfort With Calling
One of the greatest dangers in life is becoming so comfortable with where we are that we stop asking whether we are still progressing.
Comfort can quietly become stagnation.
There is nothing wrong with stability, but we must continually ask ourselves:
Am I still learning?
Am I still growing?
Am I becoming better?
Am I becoming wiser?
Am I becoming more useful?
Am I moving closer to the person God has called me to become?
Because sometimes the greatest obstacle standing between us and the next season is simply our unwillingness to change.
Romans 12:2 says:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Transformation itself means change.
New thinking.
New understanding.
New priorities.
New habits.
And sometimes even a completely new direction.
Some Things Must Be Removed Before Something Better Can Be Installed
Every electrician understands this.
Sometimes you cannot simply keep adding onto an old installation.
There comes a point where something must be disconnected, removed and replaced before the system can move forward properly.
Life can be the same.
There may be habits that need to go.
There may be attitudes that need changing.
There may be relationships that have become unhealthy.
There may be methods that worked five years ago but are holding us back today.
There may even be dreams that need adjusting because God is opening a different door.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
Not every season lasts forever.
And trying to remain in yesterday's season can prevent us from recognising today's opportunity.
Change Does Not Mean Everything Was Wrong
This is important.
Replacing an old distribution board doesn't necessarily mean that everything about the previous installation was bad.
It served its purpose.
It carried the installation through many years.
But eventually something better became necessary.
The same applies to our lives.
Some people, places, routines and opportunities were exactly what we needed for a particular season.
We can appreciate what they contributed without believing that we must remain there forever.
Sometimes moving forward does not require us to criticise the past.
We can simply say:
“Thank You, Lord, for what this season taught me. Now give me the courage for what comes next.”
Faith Gives Us Courage to Change
Change without faith can feel frightening.
But change with God becomes an opportunity.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
We don't need to understand everything before we move.
Sometimes we simply need enough faith to take the next step.
Maybe this week God is challenging you to change something.
A habit.
An attitude.
A business decision.
A relationship.
A routine.
Your way of thinking.
Your approach to your career.
Or perhaps simply the belief that things must always remain the way they have always been.
Don't automatically resist change simply because it feels unfamiliar.
Ask God:
“Is this change preparing me for the next season?”
Because sometimes what feels like disruption may actually be preparation.
This Week's Challenge
Take a moment this week and inspect your life the same way you would inspect an electrical installation.
Look carefully.
What is still serving its purpose?
What needs maintenance?
What needs upgrading?
And what needs to be completely replaced?
Don't change simply for the sake of change.
But don't remain stuck simply because the familiar feels safe either.
Sometimes progress requires change.
Sometimes change requires courage.
And sometimes courage simply means taking the next step while trusting God with everything you cannot yet see.
Remember:
The old installation may still work — but God may be preparing you for a greater load, a greater purpose and a new season.
Trust Him enough to allow the upgrade.
Change may feel uncomfortable, but with faith, it can become the doorway to progress.
🙏 Prayer for the Week
Lord, give me the wisdom to recognise what needs to change in my life. Give me the courage to release what belongs to the previous season and the faith to step into what You are preparing for me. Help me not to become trapped by comfort or routine, but to continue learning, growing and moving forward. When I cannot see what lies ahead, remind me that You already do. Lead me into the next season of my life according to Your purpose.
